I was never offered either. However, through years of building a  
relationship with local vendors, nearly all of them will loan me a  
camera, lens or tripod for an afternoon or a day if I ask to evaluate  
it, or at very least allow me to 'buy on spec' and return an item if  
I'm not satisfied with it.

One of the local shops will match B&H prices for me, and the other  
does the best they can afford to. I work with them whenever I can.  
But they acknowledge when it would be stupid for me to buy through them.

Sometimes. All depends on their testing methodologies. Few really  
pass muster with any testing credentials.
