Do it early and often. I've just spent two hours wrestling with botched service pack 2 installation. Somehow SP2 crashed while installing, then as it was uninstalling the partial install, the whole system crashed and it acted like there was no valid xp installed. So I throw in the recovery disk which without prompting formats the HD.
