Makes me feel less bad about scratching my bike in a stupid crash on
Saturday.

Being a bit too used to my commuting bike (with rim-brakes), I
grabbed the brake lever a bit harder than I should have. That taught
me how much stopping power a big disc brake has. The wheel locked
instantly and the road was jumping up at me before I knew what had
happened.

Lucky it was the rear brake or I'd have literally eaten concrete.
The front brake is bigger and would have thrown me straight over the
bars. Instead my knee is looking pretty battered and the bruising
has really come out today. I was able to ride into town yesterday
but today I can barely walk and I'm upset that I probably won't be
doing any riding for a week or more.

One lesson I'd like to pass on is that when riding you should always
wear good gloves. I'm amazed that mine were so strong that they
didn't show the slightest damage after being driven quite hard
straight into the road surface. I really hate injuring my hands as
the wounds/dressings keep getting in the way of everything. Those
gloves were a birthday present so I expressed appropriate amounts of
gratitude :)
