I kind of agree with you, Bruce. Yet there is this bigger piece of wood on the foreground on the right. This is this constant dilemma in this kind of shot - to include something like this in the frame or to make a few steps forward and leave it out.
I think I rather like what Peter did, though personally I would at least try to take the same shot without that pole and see how it compares with this one.
