I was given a hint when browsing for a similar device by one of the
manufacturers sites.

Put the empty cards in label up (visible for SD cards) and used cards
returned to pockets label down (contacts visible for SD cards).

I may add the write protect step too

I have one of the Lowepro cases.
Keep empty cards in the right side, full cards on the left.
Whenever a cards is full, I also slide the Write Protection switch on
after removing it from the camea. It doesn't get switched off until
the pictures are safely transferred to PC or CD.
