I guess you and I just have totally different priorities. I
dont use the 200-300mm (FF equiv)/(135-200 APS) range on zooms hardly at
all (its a speciality, rather than general purpose, range based
on actual needs for me, and when I go that long, I generally prefer
primes ).
In the more common 28-200(FF)/18-135(APS) range, I would much rather
have a FASTER
constant aperture zoom lens/lenses (especially for MANUAL exposure
which I prefer for most situations, even on digital at this point due to
exposure
latitude problems) , and especially for manual focussing
which I still prefer on ANY camera in most situations. I really
HATE variable aperture zooms, because Manual exposure with them, both
ambient and flash is nearly impossible to get consistant
results in terms of exposure as you zoom in and out when the
f-stop variation is one stop or more from end to end and it often
is.

John,

Consider the fact that the 45-125 is actually only *approximately* 67.5-
187.5mm equivalent, where as the DA 50-200 is *approximately* 75-300mm,
you're losing an awful lot at the long end for that constant f/4
aperture.

You also lose automatic SR on the K10D, numerous exposure modes,
auto-focus
and end up with a lens that weighs over twice as much with a filter size
of
58mm as opposed to 52mm, it's also larger in diameter and longer!!! but
arguably has better build quality.

I don't own the DA 50-200 but I used to own the FA 28-70 f/4. I sold the
28- 70 after I tried the FA 28-105 f/4-5.6 Power Zoom, I found it just
as sharp
and at 70mm the aperture is f/4.5. I'd love to know at what point the
50-200
shifts from f/4 to a smaller aperture value 100mm, 135mm?

I believe the DA 50-200 can be had for $100 in the US, I know which lens
I'd
rather have in my bag, despite the lack of aperture ring.

Regards,

John
