That's the Holy Grail of many folks, and nothing like it exists yet.
Sigma's DP-1 might be close, presuming it has a good lens and an
accessory shoe for an optical viewfinder.

The Achilles Heel of compact digital cameras is sensitivity. I've had
several and they've all been frustrating because I find myself
wishing I had my "real" camera with me too often. The Panasonic LX1
was one of the best I found as its image stabilization coupled with
the excellent lens and RAW format storage gave me a lot of options,
but I found the camera overall to be very awkward in my hands. Too
thin, small, fiddly to operate smoothly. And then the wall of noise
at anything over ISO 200 kiboshed it.

The only compact I'm using now (other than the Treo 650) is the Fuji
F30. It has decent image quality at up to ISO 800 and is reasonably
responsive in use, with a decent lens and a nice big screen to frame
and view photos on. I use it as an A/V notebook and snapshot gatherer
when I don't want to carry the DSLR. The size is about the same as my
Rollei 35, handy and not too fiddly, and it can make a good 8x10
print or larger.

I still too often want a "real" camera so I mostly just carry the K10D.

The Sigma DP-1 might be an answer. Supposed to be the same sensor
going into the Sigma 14 DSLR, so it should have decent rendering and
sensitivity. 40mm f/4 is about a stop slower than I'd prefer but it
might be workable.
