I shouldn't be, yet am, amazed by people that do photography. They always seem to have an idea of how it should look even though they weren't there. :-) In this case I did bring up the darker areas as well as the snow a fair amount over the original exposure. Doing more so would highlight some flare that was going on. Personally I like there being less detail in the shadows. For one, there is not much detail in shadows to begin with and secondly, I think that part of the image conveys exactly the feeling I was hoping to put forth... it's a late winter afternoon with the sun going down, it's starting to get dark, and the cold of the night is setting in.
