Not all SD cards have the locking switch.  None of mine have it although, 
admittedly, they aren't top name cards - they're Kingmax brand.

Looking at the FAQs on the Kingmax website, I found the following:

Q: The Kingmax SD card does not have a write protect switch, why is this?
A: Kingmax follows the SDA (Secure Digital Association) guidelines, the write 
protect switch is an optional design. Our Engineers found that the write switch 
was easily broken and once the switch is broken the card can not rewrite the 
data. Kingmax instead uses their PIP technology giving the users added benefits 
the competition does not have. The product is water resistant, resistant to 
heat and shock, higher density and better performance.
