Don't throw them away if you still see an image, though!  My specialty at my 
last job was digitally restoring old & faded photos, and I know from 
experience that there is almost always SOMEthing you can do with oldies like 
those.  If you find some pics that were probably good in a past life, try 
scanning one and playing with it in photoshop (adjustment layers are the 
best way to go, such as levels and color balance, instead of applying 
changes directly to the image).  Heck, you could even send one to me and 
I'll play with it a bit.  It's fun!
