I don't know the specifics of how these things are implemented except for some very rough conceptual notions, which might well be incorrect. Suffice it to say that this is the area where a low level engineer with deep knowledge of a particular sensor design, signal processing implementation, and a lot of creativity makes a living... :-) One of my old photo buddies living nearby has been involved in imager chip design for thirty years. When he starts talking about image processing at the level he's comfortable with, well, you might as well be talking Betelgeusian for the amount I understand.
