Well, I've just parted with $140 (ouch the local taxes and prices) and now I am happy chap with Manfrotto 676b (digi?) monopod and Manfrotto 486rc2 ball head. I opted to buy this slightly more expensive (at least locally) ball head, 'cause I hope I will be using it on my tripod as well, instead of that rather awkward head that came with it.
