I'm using the gimbal mount for the real poor ;-)
The Manfrotto 393 (don't remember the number sold as Bogen).
I'm very happy with it BTW.

A good ball head is on my wish list, I have a Manfrotto 486RC2. The RC2
mounting is a bit loose for my needs. The Manfrotto 468MGRC3 is the most
likely candidate, because it has the mounting system in common with the 393.

Mostly harmless (just plain Norwegian)

Hey, Tim, as a comparison, I'll run through some tests with the in-lens
IS on my new Canon 500/4 and the Wimberley sidekick (poor man's gimbal).
All my nature-shooting Canon friends leave IS on all the time. I
never did side-by-side with the 300/4 IS (old first generation IS) and a
regular ball head.

I'll let you know what I see and post the shots of IS on a and off.

What Gimbal head do you have?
