I would fix it.  The wear being created by the binding will possibly be 
making the rest of the focusing slacker.  Buy some good screwdrivers, 
see someone in the labs for a bung that fits inside the filter threads 
and scoop the end out so that it clears the front element.

Use pressure to reform the tube, not thumping.
