From what I understand, the Canon IPF5000 has the best colour gamut 
today, but is a right pain to work with. That said, you should see 
better results from newer inksets than the old 1270/80, Epson has made a 
lot of improvements with the Ultrachrome and K3 sets.

HP's similar in performance to Epson's K3 inks as far as I'm aware.
