I have found with my S20 that if i scan them in b/w mode then they come out terribly. I get good results if i scan them as a colour negative and then import them into Photoshop, then turn them into a b/w image by using the channel mixer and clicking monochrome. I dont use grey scale as it doesnt do a great job.
If i scan them in b/w mode i seem to lose some shadow detail.
