Unless the front element has cleaning marks, you wouldn't see a loss of sharpness like that. A few scratches might cause some flare issues, but I wouldn't think anything more serious. I may be mistaken, but I believe India Ink applied to a scratch can eliminate any possible optical problems that it might cause. I am certain if there is a better solution, someone will tell you.
