90% of writing is editing. You get sick and tired of what you wrote before you are done. Another 9% is marketing, but that seems harder than the editing. So actually writing something is only 1% of the job.
I have started about six books, but gave up long before they were completed. I have written maybe a dozen articles, half of which were actually published (not counting when I was the editor and thus had an in, however that is another story), but didn't pay anything to speak of. My understanding is that once you have a "NAME" they pay you big money and publish everything you ever wrote, including the things they refused before you became a "NAME". If you really want to do this, Dave, go join a local writer's group (look for one that has a least a couple of published authors involved). Your local library can probably point you towards one or more.
