Update time! Process of elimination has led me to believe my computer problems are software based, as my computer recognizes USB 1 devices, but not USB 2. However, in the process of trying to solve this, I managed to fuck up my video drivers and some other things. I've never screwed up this badly while trying to fix a computer before, and am rather surprised at myself.
I got one of my external hard drives connected (I remembered it has a firewire port), so what I'm going to do is just dump my important info from the computer to the external drive and start the long & arduous task of reinstalling WindowsXP (and everything else) from scratch. Hooray for technology! The best part is that this happens on the same day I get rejected for a government job and start coming down with a cold. Ain't life grand?
