I think "punchy" might be an oversimplification, but I've found a good (though not infallible!) way to guess if a shot's going to make it or not is to shrink it down to a 60 x 90 thumbnail and see what it looks like at that size. LCheck out at Paul Stenquist's Gallery page to see the master of "images that work even as thumbnails" :) Not that images that don't stand out at thumbnail size are bad; they just benefit more from a venue other than a web gallery for display.
