I've had this happen to me twice.  In both cases it was a magazine with a huge 
circulation.  I think that just like any other large organization, they become 
impersonal.  I've since sworn off subscribing to main stream magazines.  The 
first time it happened the "collection agency" was actually a subsidy of the 
publisher.  The second time a real collection agency's name was used.  I check 
my credit report annually and nothing ever came of either instance.  They're 
posturing, trying to scare you into renewing a subscription.  It doesn't take a 
genius to figure out that this is bad business, but they probably have an army 
of actuaries telling them otherwise.  You might want to give it a few months 
and check your credit report, but I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.
