As counterpoint, I've got one, tried it out, and so far it's been sitting its box unused. It doesn't fit well in the Domke F803, Billingham L2, Domke F5XB or Tamrac SL5. So far I haven't seen a need for it, my hands are quite comfortable on the camera without it.
