I just bought a small hand held mat cutter a few weeks ago. Something like
15.00. Having only used the big pro models in a large photo lab in the
navy, I didn't have any idea it would work.
Pleased to say it works really good. The key to success is a good
straightedge and a way to clamp it in place as you cut. Forget about holding
the straight edge by hand.
I have a large woodworkers bench in my old studio and lots of wood working
clamps. From start to finish I can layout and cut a mat in under 5 minutes,
so considering the mat and framing section of the camera store charges 12.00
for a custom mat, I figure I have already paid for it and then some!
