Lightroom will write to its database fairly often as you work, but  
basically it just reads from the image files unless you have it set  
to automatically update XMP metadata as it goes ... which I recommend  
turning off, as it slows things down. Better to select the files you  
are working on and force an XMP write when needed instead.

Otherwise, the overhead is not very different at all.

Glad you're enjoying the iMac! Nice system.

Lightroom will run respectably well on any G4 or later Apple system  
running Mac OS X v10.4.3 as a minimum, but yes: it runs better on  
more modern hardware with more horsepower.
