I calibrate the ACD23 to 140 luminance, 1.8 gamma and 5500K white
point with the Eye One Display 2 and iMatch software. It's a warm-
white which suits proofing for gallery/exhibition lighting and
provides a very close match to what comes out of the printer.

If you go to my calibration page at
   http://homepage.mac.com/ramarren/calibration/cal.html
my monitor is set so that each strip in the step wedge is visually
distinguishable, the white and black end bits match the white and
black surrounds, and the 11th step from the left reads out with the
Digital Color Meter in 16bit values as 32639 R, 32639 G, 32639 B.

Your gamma setting might shift that center point and/or might affect
being able to see all the gray steps on one end or the other.
