I believe it's also a scam to get around parallel import legislation in many countries. Controlling the distribution channel is very important to media companies (and many others). I seem to recall hearing that it's technically illegal to sell region- locked players in NZ. Mine (purchased quite a long time ago) was region-free out of the box. I've imported a number of DVDs from both the US (region 1) and the UK (region 2) - this is stuff that is either completely unavailable here or is simply cheaper to buy via Amazon.
