I've run into this sort of situation before. Pentax has no choice but to 
replace any damaged components for warranty liability reasons. I'd get a 
second opinion from an independant repair facility that is willing to do 
less work (obviously with less warranty as well).
Personally though, and as much as I like the istD, I don't think spending 
even half what Amita was quoted for the repair is a good investment.
