The configuration default is "no AF in remote" ... notion being that you set up the shot, focus, then use the remote to trigger the shutter release after getting into the picture. Setting the custom function to "AF in remote", the camera should drive the AF system (be careful that you have something you want in focus in line with an AF sensor point and the AF switch set to AF-S or AF-C) and then make the exposure. I just tested it with my K10D (firmware 1.11) and it works exactly as described above. Try a different lens or two before you consider the body to be malfunctioning. (Side note: I love the fact that Pentax put an IR remote sensor both front and back. It makes working in the field with a tripod and the mirror-up prefire a joy.
