Marnie,

along with the other suggestions you've had, you might also want to
consider a Thermarest. They pack up very small, and are much lighter
and more comfortable than a picnic blanket. Mine weighs a few ounces
and packs into a stuff bag about 12" long by 12" circumference (i.e.
not much bigger than a wine bottle). In use it is about 4' long by 18"
wide and 1.5" deep. It's the smallest and lightest that was available
when I bought it for travelling. You can get bigger ones with more
padding. They're quick and easy for me to inflate - you will need to
check this for yourself of course.

Available from camping shops.

Thanks. Yes, I noticed when I went to REI that Thermarest also has pads that
aren't inflatable. Previously I thought they were all inflatables. I eyed
them and I am thinking about them.
