I don't think it's as simple as you make out.

It's plain to see that the A*85/1.4 exhibits less hard edge bokeh
around the plane of focus, this translates directly to smoother OOF
areas in the background regardless of the reach due to DOF (which in
this case wouldn't likely be very significant assuming a 1m subject to
lens distance and a 5m background distance)
