I have had a similar problem.
My wife only uses AOL. (My fault - that is what I started her on, now
she is used to it.)

When she travels, she cannot send me an email whether to my AOL or
this account or any other. Unless she uses AOL webmail. She has no
problem sending to anyone else, whether in her address book or not.
She can however Reply to me with no problem. When trying to send, she
gets a bounce-back from AOL that says that [whatever account she is
trying to reach] is not accepting email. Right.
