The dynamic range from the horizon to the shadows on the hillside was  
so large that even with a 2 stop ND grad filter I couldn't make an  
exposure that would get it all in. I ended up making six exposures  
and compositing this one from the two of them that captured the upper  
and lower portions of the scene best. Luckily, the upper and lower  
sections of the scene were reasonably static, but I couldn't use an  
HDR technique because of the two ships moving off shore near the  
docks. One is only visible in the larger web rendering if you look  
hard (upper left quadrant, bordering the shimmer of light on the  
water) but is pretty easy to see in the full size print.

The blackish portion of the hill is foliage in deep shadow on the  
nearest portion of the hillside, you're seeing it as a silhouette  
against the slightly lighter haze behind it.
