The rare times I shot weddings I always brought a step stool.  Otherwise 
there was the risk of a bad POV in the group shots.

I sometimes carry a plastic tote that holds hunter red clothes (for when 
the ole boys are really going to town), a first aid kit, and a few other 
emergency gear items. It has served as a step stool many a time.

Sounds like a very reasonable idea to me - hopefully you have a high 
enough tripod (speaking for myself, I have a harder time holding a 
camera on a stool or platform.)
