Well we can only postulate if we aren't in the business but I would bet that there ain't much chance of seeing 48bit (or 12/14 bits per colour plus padding) too soon. This means that for the mean time, there will be a broadening gap between the quality of a good film scan vs the output of a digital camera most notably in the areas of subtle gradation such as cloudy skies.
