Thanks to everyone who replied - looks like I'll pack these drives as 
full as possible!  I did no know that system restore could be disabled 
on an individual drive basis - so I'm going to do that as well.

I was toying with the idea of creating a new, non-administrator user and 
setting these drives as read-only for that profile (once they are fully 
loaded etc.) That would prevent accidental over-writes or erasures, but 
I'm not sure if being a non-administrator would cause many headaches 
(other than having to log off and back in when installing software etc.)

I wound up buying a 5th drive today - the sale was over, a new sale was 
on but this one was $20 more. So it goes - I missed a set of 150 CD's 
when I did my initial calculations - between that, the fact that the 
drives hold 40 gigs each less than I thought, plus the slack space loss, 
it looks like I'll need the 5th drive...
