This is often the case with periodicals. I think it's more to do with the
costs involved in shipping items larger or bulkier than the actual
magazine - including the odd free roll of film on the cover.

Cost is certainly an issue (d'oh!) with me. I subscribed to AP during an
promotional offer and the cost worked out to about 69 quid a year (I live
in England), where the normal UK subs rate is 94 quid. (Sorry, 'quid' =
GBPounds) I certainly would not subscribe to a paper-based production,
even weekly, if the cost were the other side of a hundred pounds. There's
too much information, quicker, accessed on the net to warrant that. But I
might spend that much (and more) if I were living somewhere like India.
Then again, I might try setting up my own magazine!

Paper magazines are in decline. I used to subscribe to 'MacWorld', a
monthly costing about 3 or 4 quid an issue. Being monthly, all the news
in it was out of date by up to 6 weeks (publishing a monthly means
'putting to bed' so early that any news is stale by the time you read it.
Okay, features and how-to's are always worth a look, but other than that,
it just wasn't worth it. Online websites provide up-to-the-minute news
and response, at little cost to the reader.

However, at the moment, there's still nothing like rolling up a
well-thumbed issue of something like AP and stuffin it in yer back pocket
for a quick nosy in the cafe. At least, not until we have pliable,
roll-up PDA's (stuffed in a pocket) that connect up wirelessly for email
and net. Then the paper mags will have a real fright...
