I've been there and can understand. I had 20 or so beautiful (I thought) shots of Lazuli Buntings which just didn't make the grade for like reasons.

You are absolutely right Tom. It is front focused. The poor fellow wandered
constantly, and I had trouble geting the focus right in the weather. When
opening up to focus, and then steping down again to make the shot, it is a
hit and miss on moving subjects. I can live with manual focus, bit I wish I
had an A-lens.

I took about 30 frames of him. About 2/3 where in focus, and this was not.
But, this was the one, if you see what I mean.
