Up until just a few years ago, most of my photography was done on a 4x5 camera, hardly something suitable for snapshots. I'll keep working at it. Her hand is in the full frame image, I try to crop to a very few aspect ratios, either 2:3, 4:5 or 1:1. This looked best with a square crop, at least to me, and I needed her head to be where it is, again to balance the image to my eye. All things are a compromise.
