The purpose to applying an antireflection coating has nothing at all to do with the effects of a polarizing grid on light passing through it. Antireflection coatings reduce scatter at the air-glass interface, which causes flare. This is just as much a problem with a polarizing filter's surfaces as it is with any other optical surface.
