Lots of people feel that way. For me,  being comfortable with computers, it 
isn't a big issue. If I see files are being  copied (they do give a count and 
progress) and I verify that it indeed has  files, then I am not really worried. 
It's really just a portable laptop HD with  attached firmware/software to 
read in files. 

So, no, I am not paranoid  about it. But many are. For me, most computer 
storage involves some level of  trust anyway.
