After you set up the flash, you need to mount it on
the camera and push the shutter button down halfway so
that the flash can tell the camera what channel it's
using.

Also, methinks that on the setup menu, wireless item,
#1 Master causes the built-in to contribute to the
exposure, while #2 Controller is only bright enough to
control the remote flashes.

All of that said, I have done similarly with my ist D
and EF 500 DG Super, and it is rather fun to wander
around a room and shoot, getting good exposures
without having the flash on camera.
