I can't help with the lens selection without knowing more about the
location, but I will suggest taking multiple shots in quick succession
(ie don't just take 1 shot at a time take 2 or 3).

The reason being you'll invariably get people blinking or looking in
the wrong direction. You can them later in post processing merge the
shots and correct for this.
