Sure, I understand that. Most of the long-timers on the list know each other either directly, or know someone who knows someone, or have enough online knowledge of each other that the risks are relatively low. Clearly in your case it didn't work out too well, but to send money or goods to someone who's a complete stranger is folly of the first order in my opinion.
