Well, there are a lot of American microbrews called IPAs, because they have lots of hops and a higher-than-average alcohol content, and sometimes even some aging in oak (which are the things that distinguished the British IPAs from ordinary bitter).
That said, having recently sampled several excellent British beers again, the American versions have gone way overboard in hoppiness compared to their contemporary British counterparts. Then again, British beers aren't what they were before WWII in alcohol or hoppiness, so the American IPAs might be closer to the original than the current British versions.
