You can also get surge protector circuit breakers for you electrical panel, up to and including the main breaker which will give whole house protection. They are hell for expensive however. And as far as I know all those insurance plans (that is what they are although they call them warranties so they do not have to be a licensed insurance company) exclude direct hits, otherwise they are likely to be replacing your house.
