At first I thought it was the hitherto hardest evidence of global warming. :-) As Ann said, this is metamorphic rock. A layer of limestone sediments subjected to high pressure and temperature at the time of the Caledonian folding. The end product is banded marble with newer, volcanic (magmatic?) minerals filling the cracks.
