The question is:

If you are working with proper exposures of average scenes, how would  
you imagine that they can be made to look 'better'? What does  
'better' mean in this instance?

I would never rely upon PPL to do my work, its controls are too  
constrained to be of much use. I use Lightroom and PS CS2. I also  
don't know why you'd want 'that oversharpened Rebel look' but you can  
certainly get there with Photoshop and Camera Raw. ;-)
