I can sympathize as I had the same happen about 6 weeks ago.

Check that the port on your network hub, and that modem are not blown as well 
as the network card. On my system it blew the network card and the port it was 
connected to, plus the printer port and laser printer. I now cringe every time 
I hear thunder.

There should be no reason you can not put the drive in a USB box.
