I suspect they did that intentionally, to provide working room for  
lighting which at very high magnifications is often occluded by the  
lens hood. The Olympus ZD 35mm f/3.5 Macro has a built in hood as  
part of the lens, and it is multipart so that at 1:1 magnification  
the lens is quite close to the end of the extended lens barrel. This  
makes a huge difference in being able to get some light onto the  
subject matter, since 1:1 magnification puts the subject so close to  
the front element of the lens.
