Smashed (literally) my left kneecap in 1980. Other joint injuries to go with
it. It has never fully recovered to the point where I feel it has equivalence
to the other side but that is mainly a perception thing - I am always aware of
it. I estimate that I have recovered about 90%+ of function/strength. It took
a lot of effort - after a month's immobility, my left thigh was dramatically
smaller than my right. It took a good couple of years to be comfortable about
putting it to hard use - say a good day's walking. I find that it aches up to
24hours after something like that, not during. Aspirin helps.

Recovery of movement was thanks to an exceedingly violent physio who would
force my knee past where I was willing to go. Although I made enough noise to
wake the dead during the process, it was only necessary a few times to break
adhesion and restore effectively full movement. I suggest you take up with a
sadist.
